Youth under 19 do not have access to the housing they need.
-
Let’s make sure that vulnerable young people have safe, affordable housing and the supports they need to thrive.
-
1/3 of the youth who have come to A Way Home Kamloops for housing are under 19 and right now we do not have appropriate housing options for them.
-
We estimate that there could be over 100 youth under the age of 19 who need a safe place to call home in Kamloops.

Youth under 19 do not have access to safe housing and they are caught in the gap between the housing that is available and the housing they need. Our current housing options do not have the 24/7 staffing that is needed to support young people with complex needs such as life skills training, cultural supports, mental health and health support, education, training, employment services, and more. We urgently need housing options that meet that needs of some of our most vulnerable youth including young moms, Indigenous and Metis youth, LGBTQ2S+ youth, neuro divergent youth, youth who are living with complex trauma, anxiety, depression and more.
1/3 of the youth who come to A Way Home Kamloops for housing are under 19 and we have no homes suitable for them. The Youth Homeless Count that we conducted in 2018 found 150 youth under 24 years of age needed housing at that time, and we have seen a 117% increase* in the number of homeless people since 2018. This means we can estimate that there are 325 youth in need of housing in Kamloops including over 100 young people under 19 who are currently in need of a safe place to call home.
A Way Home Kamloops needs to create new housing designed specifically for young people under 19 who have nowhere else to go. This program needs to provide 24/7 on site supports, cultural supports that meets the needs of Indigenous and Metis young people, life skills training that helps equip youth with the skills they need to live independently, and connections to the community to help stitch together a safety net of ongoing supports that meet each unique youth where they are at.
You can help us build this new program and close the gap for youth under 19!
